The Unexpected Impact Your Story Can Have

The train schedule is all over the place. They’re doing massive construction on new infrastructure in the city so this ‘temporary inconvenience’ has been going on for weeks. As my trip drew closer I was trying to figure out how to avoid spending  a fortune, and how to disturb the least amount of peoples sleep in order to get to the airport.

I put a notice up in a local forum, looking for someone to share a ride to the airport, in the middle of the night. An old acquaintance responded within minutes,  he was driving his wife to the airport that night and would be delighted to take me.drive

What a relief. As the trip drew closer, just one less thing to arrange.

I had expected some small talk and then silence. It had been a long time since our kids were in the same class in school – years had gone by – and it was the middle of the night. Who has the energy to chat? But that was not the case, we talked the whole way. That’s over an hour of non-stop chat. Actually I think I did most of the talking – but in answer to their questions.

You see, my generous driver is a subscriber to this storyzine, and I guess he has been for quite some time. I had no idea.

And that means, he’s very interested in the power of story and in how story can help you interact at a deeper level with your clients, and of course how using stories can make your business thrive.

So, why am I telling you this?

Because this is not the first time it’s happened. That I’ve gone to a place somewhere around the world and interacted with people whom I assume don’t know me very well – to find they’ve been reading my stories for years.

The common characteristics of these encounters is that I don’t have to do any introductions or make an effort to explain myself and my business. The stories have done the work. These people have become fascinated by my business, my mission, my impact – because of the stories I tell. They want to know more, they want to learn and often they want to join my programs or hire me.

You see, it’s amazing how far your name, reputation and work will travel when you use story. I’ve literally been walking down streets in cities across the world when people have stopped me to ask about a story I’ve told. It’s that wild!

So, I want you to consider how you can use your stories to influence and impact in this way. I want you to be able to touch people by telling the stories of your experiences, because they matter.  When you share a powerful story, not only will it touch the minds and hearts of others, you will see that your work will reach audiences far and wide and your business will thrive.
